Chapter 2: Coaching for Competence
Suggested Time Frame: 20 minutes
Goal: The goal of this chapter is to examine coaching as a technique to improve the preceptor’s ability to foster the preceptee’s acquisition of the knowledge, skills and attitudes to provide patient centered care and enhance teamwork, communication and collaboration in the clinical setting.
At the completion of this chapter, the participant will:
1. Describe the value and importance of coaching in nursing
2. Identify ways in which coaching enhances communication and is beneficial for both preceptor and preceptee in the provision of patient centered care.
3. Distinguish between effective and ineffective clinical coaching methods.
